How to Spot Fake Gold
Weight of gold Gold is a very dense metal, so it will be heavier than it looks. Use a jewelry scale to determine the exact weight of the gold. [1]
Gold bars usually have their weight on them. Check that the actual weight matches this standard.
Many coins and gold coins will weigh on them. Check that the weight is correct.
Size measurement. Gold should be small compared to its weight. Counterfeit gold coins may have more weight, but they are also too large to fit the true gold weight.
Check the diameter and thickness of all the gold coins you are considering purchasing. Collectible coins specifications can be found in the money guides or online.
Gold bars are sold in several different sizes, but the standard gold bar size is 7 "x 3" x 1 "and weighs 400 ounces or 27.5 lbs.

Make a light scratch on the gold using the nail file.
Use a dropper to apply a drop of nitric acid to the zero point on gold.
If the liquid turns green, the element is likely to be another metal such as zinc and gold-plated. If the liquid turns milky, the item is likely to be gold and silver plated.
